Saudi Arabia Work Visa

Why do you need a Saudi work Visa

If you want to work in Saudi KSA  you will need to have a work visa for Saudi Arabia, the work visa will entitle you to enter the kingdom and work for 90 days during which time your sponsor (employer) will convert your visa into an Iqama or residency permit enabling you to stay and work.

How easy is it to get a Saudi Arabian Work Visa

If you can find work in Saudi Arabia then getting the Saudi Work Visa can be relatively simple as long as the company you are going to work for has not employed too many expatriate workers in relation to the number of Saudis they employ and that they are not trying to employ you for a position that has been designated for Saudis only.

Saudi Arabia Work Visa

Work Visa for Saudi Arabia

Many jobs now cannot be filled by non-saudis such as positions within the HR department of a company. You may find that a company employs you for one position but when you look at the paperwork for your visa it mentions a completely different job position as the company is not able to employ you in the position they want you for. This can result in senior management in companies having visas and iqamas that say that they are electricians or even just “labor”. This may not be a problem in most cases but if your visa is as labor or a driver then you may have problems with regards being able to use banking facilities and in being able to have weekends escaping to Dubai. They say that you can change your job description, however I have never known anyone who has managed to do so.

If a company has exceeded its quota of work visas it may try to bring you into the kingdom on a Saudi business visa for a short time whilst it sorts out the problem, I had this for almost a year with a company I worked for and it caused me many problems.

Application Process for Saudi Work Visa

The initial application for your work visa is made by your sponsor in Saudi Arabia who will get you a visa number which will be sent to you to allow you to process your visa – if the company can get the visa approved and has not been blacklisted for having too many expats.

This visa number will be sent to you and you should then carefully read the website for your local Saudi Embassy as to what their requirements are. They will typically require copies of signed contracts in Arabic, legalized educational certificates and legalized medical reports covering items such as HIV and lung function.

Most countries now require you to go through an agent to get your visa, the agent will help advise you as to what paperwork you require and ensure that it is completed correctly, this process however can take a couple of weeks to complete to as long as a month.

Getting your Iqama

Iqama

Saudi Arabia Residency Permit - Iqama

Your Saudi work visa will be valid for 90 days, at the end of this probation period the company employing you has to convert the visa into a residency permit or Iqama or if you fail your probation get you to leave the country. You Iqama is a small credit card type card that you have to carry with you at all times as your ID. The Iqama will allow you to make use of the banks, western union, hire cars, even something as simple as getting a Sim card. Without an Iqama it can very difficult to do anything in KSA as they will rarely accept any other type of ID.

Can you work for someone else in KSA

The rules in KSA are very clear, you can only work for your sponsor, if you are working for someone that is not your sponsor and you are caught (inspections do happen) then you can be deported after spending some time in prison. Those people that think they can buy a work visa then come to Saudi Arabia are being misled, they can only officially work for the person that has sponsored them, not anyone else. That being said there is a very healthy illegal labor market for maids, drivers, nurses and other workers throughout the kingdom, but if you are caught you will be in trouble. You also run the risk of not being paid as if your employer is not your sponsor it is against the law for them to pay you for services and some unscrupulous employers do bring in labor short term and then not pay them.

Transferring Sponsorship

If you want to take another job while you are in KSA you can’t just quit and go work for the new company offering you more money and better conditions; you have to get a letter of no objection from your current sponsor to allow your iqama and work visa to be transferred. Not all sponsors will allow this and I have heard from many people who have been refused a letter a NO to enable them to transfer their sponsorship. These people then either have to finish their current contract with their sponsor and leave or they leave before ending their contract. In both cases however without the letter of no-objection they will have to wait one or two years before they can return to Saudi Arabia to work for another employer.

Can you return to Saudi Arabia if you leave

If you have left your employment and your sponsor has given you a letter of no objection then you can return to work in Saudi Arabia as soon as you find a new sponsor. If however you have not been issued with a letter of NO then you will have to wait for between 1 and 2 years depending on which country you come from.

If you did not leave at the end of your contract, but failed to return when using a exit/re-entry visa then you need to check the status of your old Iqama number on the MOFA website, if your sponsor has reported you as a runaway or some other case then it will show when you search your iqama number. If this is the case do not try to return unless you can get your sponsor to drop the case.

If your Iqama has not been reported in any way then you will have to wait 1 or 2 years before you can return to Saudi Arabia.

The only way around this is if you have been lucky enough not to have had your biometric data recorded (fingerprints) as you can then just “loose” your old passport with any old Saudi visa in it and reapply.

I hope this article gives you all of the information you need about your Saudi Arabia work visa, if you need any further information feel free to leave a comment below.

I stand to correction, but you also need a police clearence along with the mentioned documents when applying at your nearest KSA embassy. In my country it takes 6-8 weeks, so plan accordingly !

      Hi Richard,

after 1 year you can apply for a new visa even if you did not go “final exit” on your last visa.
However if you left any debts in Saudi you may find yourself arrested if you return. If you don’t have any debts then no problem at all!

      Hi Zai

If you have left debts behind within Saudi Arabia that is against the law. You will be arrested on your return and held until you repay your debts – you will not be able to work there to repay your debts as you will be jailed. If you want to return to Saudi Arabia pay your debts first.

      Hi Syed

The “azaad” visa is not legal – you can only work for your sponsor within Saudi Arabia and if you are caught working for someone else you will find yourself in a lot of trouble as will your sponsor. Your best bet is to find an actual job and apply for it and have them sponsor you officially.

      Hi Bilal

I do not read Arabic so I cannot translate what the labor office has to say!
However if you did not return at the end of your vacation then you will need to wait at least one year before you are able to apply for another visa. You should not face problems when you return unless you have left debts unpaid in which case you could be arrested as leaving debts is a criminal offense.

    Hi,

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’ve come to Saudi Arabia on a work visa & now have my iqarmah. I’m still in the 3 months probation period of my contract with my employer. I’d like to leave now & according to my contract both my employer or myself can leave without notice during this probation period.

My question is: Now I’ve informed my employer of my intent to terminate my contract & leave, they’re threatening to blacklist me & saying I won’t be able to return to Saudi with another employer. Is this possible as I’ve not broken my contract, don’t have any outstanding debt & intend to leave on a final exit?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated as I’m a little worried now.

    Hello,
My husband has been in KSA for almost 3 months on a business visa. His employer keeps assuring him that they have filed for his Iqama and that the process is at its final stages at the labor dept. The only hold up, is that it is the month of Ramadan and things tend to get slower.
Meanwhile, he is getting his visa extended without leaving KSA.
    My questions are:
1 – Is there a chance his employer could be lying to him about his Iqama? Since it is taking more than 2 months in the final stages.
2 – Is it possible for him to get his visa renewed without leaving KSA.
    Please advise.

    Thank you very much

My previous employer was having financial and management issues so they started making things very hard on me. I thought the easiest way is to leave the company/country. For this reason I left Saudi Arabia in March, 2008 on re-entry and never came back. When I arrived to the US, I sent email to my employer stating that I had to leave the country without notice because of personal reason. The CEO did not appreciate that and took it personally. Few weeks later, I received an email from the company with termination letter as lacking for skills required for the job. Honestly, I have never looked back and figured out if they did anything against me personally. Today, July of 2013, I received an offer from great company and really interested with the offer… My question is, would my ex-employer have taken an action to prevent me from entering Saudi again? If they did, is there any grace period? How will I know? Please advise….

    dear sir,
i came to pakistan 1.5 year before on re-enrty visa, recently i checked on MOFA website about iqama status the result is ” absent from work” my questions are:-
1- can i go back to saudia with any other employer now?
2- should i wait till the MOFA of KSA publish different status result?
3- should i wait 0.5 year more or till the status change on MOFA? website.

I am Zia.ur.Rehman from Pakistan. I joined a company as Engineer with Visa of their Sister company. After two year of service when I returned to Pakistan for annual leave on exit-re-entry visa. I faced some administrative issues for going back to KSA and I was not returned. During this course of time I have intimated the status to my employer/company time to time. Now all my issues have been resolved and I have contacted my company and they have sent new visa for me, but the sister company sent my status as “Absent from work” to JAWAZAT which I have checked on MOL (Ministry of Labor KSA) web site. Now my company has hold my new visa. Please suggest me what I have to do now and what the rule in my case is? I have read your answer above and observed that I have to wait for 1or 2 year. My question is from which date this time will start. Either from date of exit or date of reporting as absent from work and what time required in my case 1 year or 2 year. I will be very thankful to you.

I would like to ask query regarding my emergency exit last May 27,2014, it so happened that my mother died untimely last May 22, 2014 and I just arrived in Saudi Arabia on May 19,2014. I asked my employer that I will go home back to the Philippines for the internment. I was informed that my Iqama is not yet process and I can leave only by EXIT VISA through MOFA, and I made it May 27,2014. I am now planning to return to Saudi Arabia through new employer. Is it possible for me to return back to Saudi Arabia without any restrictions?

Hi My name is Luis and I am very new here in KSA. I am still in my probation period of 90 days and I have one or 2 doubts witch I would like you to answer. I have a contract of 1 year working for a Saudi company.
Before reaching the 90 days can I leave the company and get hired by another company which offers me better conditions?
If I comply with the contract (12 months) and then leave my company can I be sponsored by another Saudi company immediately or I will have to wait a certain period of time (one year, 2 years)?
In this last situation as I am leaving the company after ending my contract will I need the NO letter so that I can be hired again?
    Thanks

    Hi Admin,

I worked in Saudi Arabia for 4 years. I went to vacation knowing that my iqama and re-entry permit will expire in 1 week time. I intentionally planned that because of 3 months delayed salary of my previous company. I worked in china and finished my 1 year contract, Just recently ,i have received a good offer in saudi arabia refered to me by my local friend working in govermnent office.
My question was, if i am going to have problem going back to saudi arabia, problem entering the immigration of Saudi Arabia and my new employer can apply for my new visa? Is this possible.
Your prompt reply will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

I came from Saudi Arabia on exit/ re-entry visa but due to some reasons i can’t go back, and now my iqama has expired.

Now i got a new job in Saudi Arabia, and I clearly informed agent that “I returned on exit/ re-entry visa” and as per Arab news “there is 3 years of ban on not returning on Exit/Re-Entry” (plz refer the link from Arab news http://www.arabnews.com/featured/news/765266 regarding 3 years ban for violating exit re-entry visa and http://www.arabnews.com/featured/news/756686.) but he(agent) is telling that he will take the exit paper and will get my visa stamped.

I would like to know from u that is it possible task what he is telling.

Can working visa be extended? Say , I am working for a sponsor and the contract is for 3 years . Is there any chance to extend the visa with that sponsor or another sponsor? How easy or hard it is to find an employer there ? Do sponsor and employer mean the same thing ? And what about the sponsor or employer ? Does he need to be a Saudi citizen (Not talking about companies) ? If not then which kind of visa he needs to have??

Hello, I am in a bit of trouble and i seriously start to worry. Here is my situation. I came to Riyadh in early November on a business visit visa, this visa was extended by 30 days then i think it was again extended by 30 days but i never saw the paper for this. My sponsor is not giving me definite informations about the process. I have ask many many times to see paper or anything showing that i have some legal “authorisation” to be here. I had to go and pass a medical visit, which i did and at the clinic i was told that there was a problem with my number (i think number given when entering Saudi) and they could not register the medical visit with the relevant administration. A few days later my sponsor ask me for my passport and one photograph and said he was going to get iquama (i wanted to go with him but he said that only Saudi could go into the office, is that true?) He gave me back my passport the day after but no iqama. Now he is saying that i need to get work visa before i can get iqama. It is soon going to be 4 months i am here and have no legal papers. i am very worried. Can someone enlighten me please !! am i being told stories, lied to or is this normal? Any help, any advices will be very welcome. I hold a french passport but come from living in the UK.. Again sincere thanks for any help.

Hi, I had first gone to saudi arabia in june 2013, and finished my contract and went on exit in sept 2015, i returned in Dec 2015, but the new company terminated my contract by feb 2016, Now i am trying to get another visa stamped, but the consulate has rejected my application, as i have returned within 6 months of going on new visa.
What are my options to get my visa stamped

I’ve secured a job as a charge nurse in Saudi. When they’ve sent me my contract of employment, the job title is staff nurse. I’m not happy signing this, as it isn’t what I was offered, and doesn’t reflect my position, despite the salary being the same. They’ve told me that it’s to do with the visa, and that if I just sign it, they’ll change my contract when I arrive. I’m not happy signing this. I’ve heard that for some jobs in Saudi, when you get there, you end up not doing what you expected, but are stuck. If you try and get back home, you end up meeting all costs. I don’t want to be in this position. Anyone able to shed any light on this situation?

I m working in business visit in Riyadh. My employer extend my visa luckily I got 90 days extension. Now I asked my employer to start my work Visa process. And I want to go back Pakistan.but he is saying until your extension expire we can not process your labour visa.
If we did you must again come with business visit as per law for next 3 months.
Please suggest what is rule.what should I do

My first company declared for bankruptcy, so they give me a release, so i have a new company now, I just worked for 2 months. in my employment contract, its written that I have 3 months Probation.. Now I don’t want to continue my contract, because They didn’t give me a friday day off. I have a wife leaving together with me. they said; the reason that they cannot give a friday day off, because its a restaurant shop. now they will not allow me to transfer in other company, instead they will sent me for final exit.
